Product Description
The Nikon D800 is a 36.3MP professional HDSLR that breaks new ground in resolution and metering technology. More than an upgrade to the just-discontinued 12MP D700, the D800 is a major overhaul. Unlike the D700, which was positioned as a "prosumer" camera, the Nikon D800 is definitely geared towards pro users especially studio, fashion, and wedding and portrait photographers. The D800 has a 91,000-pixel RGB Matrix Metering System, Advanced Scene Recognition, and what Nikon says is an improved 51-point AF system. It has a relatively small form factor for a pro camera, similar in size to the D700. For videographers, the camera can capture 1080p video at up to 30fps with manual control and uncompressed HDMI output. Unlike the 16MP D4, Nikon's recently-announced new flagship camera that boasts an ISO range of 100-204-800, the D800's native ISO range is 100-6400, expandable to 50 and 25,600. However, Nikon says improvements in light transmission to the sensor photodiodes, changes in sensor design, an enhanced Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF) and 14 bit A/D conversion with a high signal to noise ratio will translate into outstanding low-light, high-ISO performance. Also unlike the D4, the D800 delivers only 4fps burst rate at full resolution, 6fps in DX mode (see below). Nikon users who have invested in DX-format lenses will be able to use them on the D800 by using the 15.4MP resolution setting. In this setting, only the pixels that cover a DX-sized portion of the s

just like new, maybe better
By Kerry Pierce
I've been a Nikon dslr user since 2004 and currently use some of their highest level cameras, such as the D300, D700 and D3s. I'm very familiar with the way their professional bodies work. I was intrigued by the D800, but didn't really need 36 megapixels for my work, so I wasn't willing to pay MSRP to buy one. I'd read so many good reviews on the camera, that when I saw this refurbished unit, for a significant savings, I couldn't resist buying one.The camera comes with all of the accessories that are included in the normal retail package. It comes in a gray box, rather than the usual Nikon gold box, with Refurbished Product printed boldly on the sides. The camera had the appearance of a brand new camera, no marks were found anywhere on the body.I've been using and testing the D800, under all kinds of lighting conditions for the last month. Like all of Nikon's professional cameras, it is a solid, well constructed camera with completely reliable function on all of my lenses, both AF-S and AF-D screwdriver lenses. The D800 autofocus is an improved version of the Multi-Cam 3500 AF module, which is their professional autofocus module. The earlier cam 3500 versions can be found in the D300, D700, D3 and D3s, with the D3s being the most recent. In most cases, my impression of the new autofocus was that its performance was as good as that of the D3s, in most cases. The only real difference that I could discern is that the D3s, with its larger, more powerful battery, is generally slightly faster to acquire and track a target. In that respect, the D800 AF behaved much like the AF found in the D300 or D700, perhaps slightly better than those two. Autofocus performance is important to me, because I like to shoot a lot of sports, action in low light conditions where AF can easily fail. Given the many reports of defective autofocus, especially the Left AF points, on new D800's, I wanted to make sure that this unit worked as it should. I'm quite satisfied that the D800 autofocus will work as well as any of my other cameras.I won't address the image quality too much, as it's been aptly covered by tons of reviews. To me, the image quality is as good as most reviewers claim it is. At low ISO, the files have more dynamic range than I think I've ever seen. It is a delight to shoot a high contrast scene and know that you can generally preserve both the highlights and shadows with this camera, to do with as you please in post processing.I can't say much about what Nikon USA does when they refurbish a camera. My understanding is that they are supposed to test the camera to ensure that it meets "new" specifications. It would seem that they did a good job of doing so, with the unit that I purchased, as it has performed flawlessly since it arrived. I would suggest, due to anecdotal evidence, that most users are quite happy with their refurbished units. I'm active on a number of internet fora devoted to Nikon DSLR's and the general feedback that I've seen on refurbished D800's is quite positive. I've also noticed that the prices on these refurbished units have gone up and they are harder to find, since I purchased mine. That would seem to indicate a higher user demand for the refurbished units. There is a 90 day warranty from Nikon USA, on refurbished cameras. Most places also allow you to purchase an extended warranty for a reasonable price, such as a 2 year standard warranty for under $100. If you're concerned about the 90 day warranty not being a long enough period of time, I'd suggest looking into the various extended warranties offered by the vendor. Most likely, you could buy a 2 year warranty and still save several hundred dollars with the purchase of the refurbished unit.Of course, in the US, most vendors offer a short time period in which you can return the camera for a full refund. I'd suggest that you test the camera thoroughly, within the allotted time frame of the vendor's return period. That's what I did and I'm confident that my D800 will stand the test of time, as have my other Nikons. The bottom line for me is that I got a great camera, while saving several hundred dollars, by buying this refurbished unit. At first, I was nervous about buying refurbished, but now I'm very happy that I did. I'm much more confident about it now and I'll be looking for refurbished units in the future.
