The Sony DSLR-A550 Digital SLR is a camera with 14.2 MP for images with great detail. The APS-C sensor yields high-sensitivity and depth-of-field control. The Sony Exmor CMOS image sensor combined with the BIONZ processor enables a high ISO of 12,800 that yields low-light pictures with lower noise and reduced loss of picture detail. The DSLR-A550 has a number of built-in features to guarantee sharp and perfectly exposed images. Smile Shutter technology enables the camera to automatically take a shot when in Live View mode, and a Face Detection system recognizes and adjusts the camera for faces in a given scene. The camera boasts 6 creative style settings and 6 scene modes which adjust the camera for optimized exposures. It can save images as RAW or JPEG formats (separately or in tandem), and with dual media slots files can be stored on Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC media cards (all sold separately). The 3.0" Extra Fine LCD display tilts up or down 90? to frame high- and low-angle shots. Eye-Start Autofocus begins focusing as soon as the camera is raised to the eye, and the 9-Point AF Sensor with Center Cross enables accurate focusing. This Sony SAL-55200-2 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DT AF Lens is a perfect companion lens to the 18-55mm kit lens. This lens has an equivalent focal length of 82.5-300mm in the 35mm/full frame standard. In other words: this is an inexpensive, short-to-long telephoto zoom for the emerging photographer. Great for nature and travel imagemaking.

Excellent Product - But Be carefull wich lens you choose

This is an excellent product and is very capable, I have been using the Sony Alpha range for years now I with some great results. However be careful which package you choose, I would suggest taking the standard Sony Lenz Package PLUS the Sony 55 -200 lens option. In addition also consider the Sony Alpha 580, and there is the next "Sony Alpha SLTA MP RANGE with Translucent Mirror Technology" Which is also excellent, but all this depends on your budget.

As a graphic design major, I have used many different cameras from low end DSLRs to $1500 bodies with 3 lenses to chose from. In this price range I used a Nikon D70, a Nikon D90, Nikon D3000, a Nikon D5000, a Canon Rebel XS, and a Canon T1i before deciding to buy my Sony. I had a Sony Cyber-shot DSC H-10 point and shoot that went through incredible amounts of abuse in the 6 or so years I've had it and still works like the day I got it. Between horses trying to take bites out of the lens to being dropped in Sacandaga Lake, I'm amazed at what this camera has survived. From this I knew the Sonys were durable, which I need in a camera. Tho photo quality for the price when I bought that little camera was also great, so I expected to see the same in their alpha line.So when I decided to buy my own outfit when I started really getting in to equine photography, I spent about 3 months doing tons of research on every brand out there and kept coming back to the a550. Finally since I didn't have access to any Sony DSLRs to try out, I went to all the camera stores in my area with a memory card in my pocket to take some test pictures with their display models. I tried the comparable Nikons and Canons, and many models of the Sony alphas, playing with settings, testing their ease of use, feeling how secure they felt in hand. From the beginning of my research I started hearing complaints about the grip on the lower end alphas. They are small and do not feel good in your hand. I tried an a350 in a store and constantly felt like i was going to drop the thing. Luckily Sony got smart quick and took their a380 and released the a390, an identical camera with a full sized grip. All the cameras in the 500 series have the full grip i believe. The other main thing I looked at while testing was the picture quality on a larger screen when I got them home, hence why I brought my own memory card. The Canons seemed to have less noise than the Nikons, and I still liked the Sonys better than either of those. As large as their raw images were, they were still very crisp (granted I knew basically nothing about working the menus on the Sony Alphas at that time).So far my only complaint about my camera is the location of the wheel compared to the off switch. A few times in my haste to adjust shutter speed to catch a quick shot, I've instead shut my camera off...Other than that little detail, I've had so much fun with this outfit. I have the Sony 75-200mm lens and since Sony used the old Minolta mount, I wanted to use a shorter lens for macro shots, etc. so I went to ebay and bought a $15 28-50 (?) mm older Minolta lens. It works fine for what I wanted it for, although the picture quality and focusing speed doesn't match the nice Sony glass, it is still a nice alternative to have when you can't afford a more expensive, if much nicer, lens. I think I will still buy a shorter Sony lens, and maybe a good prime lens if I can afford it down the road, but for now the two I have are working for my needs. I have been doing TONS of equine photography, lots of macro stuff because they look so nice, and I've been playing with some of the more creative aspects of having my own outfit. Reverse macro is among my favorites...don't worry, my photography teacher hadn't heard of it either, just google it. I'ts really fun, makes some cook effects and I bought a ring adapter off ebay for $2.
