Product Description
Premium picture quality and superb performance come easy with the remanufactured E500 digital SLR camera. The E500's compact, durable body is packed such Olympus innovations as an exclusive Dust Reduction System for spot-free photos, 8 million pixels of detail for bright and colorful images, a TruePic Turbo image processor that delivers a fast response time, and an easy-to-read 2.5-inch HyperCrystal LCD display.
Dust is all around us, and it's particularly threatening when you're swapping out a lens on a digital single-lens reflex camera. That's because your camera's electrostatically charged image sensor sometimes attracts micro dust that can ruin photos. Olympus's Dust Reduction System, by contrast, employs a patented Supersonic Wave Filter that shakes at an impressive 35,000 vibrations per second. The filter works quickly to drive back dust from in front of the camera sensor, thus ensuring dust-free, spot-free photos.
The camera owes much of its impressive image clarity to its high-performance Kodak KAF-8300CD CCD, which delivers improved dynamic range, low noise, and excellent color fidelity. The E500's TruePic Turbo image processor, meanwhile, is powerful and fast, making operation more responsive in all facets.
Lenses
The E500 comes with a pair of Zuiko digital lenses: a 14-45 mm zoom lens (f3.5 to f5.6) and a 40 to 150 mm zoom lens (f3.5 to f4.5). The former, which is equivalent to a 28 to 90 mm lens in 35 mm photography, features a 3.2 optical zoom that covers the range most frequently used in ordinary photography. The longer zoom lens, meanwhile, is great for long-distance shooting. In both circumstances, the lenses capture rich, accurate colors and deliver edge-to-edge sharpness, making all your photos look incredibly detailed.
Plus, the E500 is compatible with a huge selection of Olympus's other "designed for digital" lenses, with a wide range of focal lengths and options. Most other digital SLR cameras still use many traditional 35mm film lenses on digital bodies. But because those lenses are based on film technology rather than digital, they often let in insufficient light at the edges of a digital camera's image sensor. This can result in reduced sharpness and color definition, particularly when shooting with large apertures and wide-angle lenses. The E500 overcomes this problem by accommodating the full line of interchangeable Zuiko digital lenses, which communicate directly with the camera to ensure the best possible image quality.
Design
Good digital SLR cameras share several common features: a lightweight, compact body, an ergonomic housing, and most importantly, an easy-to-use interface. The E500 excels in all three areas, with intuitive menus and easy-to-operate buttons, automatic settings for every imaginable situation, and a diminutive housing that measures a mere 5.09 by 3.72 by 2.59 inches (W x H x D) and weighs only 15.3 ounces.
The camera also includes a large, bright 2.5-inch HyperCrystal LCD monitor (215,250 pixels) that offers many times the contrast of conventional LCD monitors. As a result, the screen displays captured images in vivid color and detail. And because photos are for sharing, the E500's LCD features a wide 160-degree viewing angle on both the vertical and horizontal access, helping all you friends see the image while huddled around the camera.
Settings and Modes
You don't need a degree in photography to shoot like a pro with the E500. Just take it home, charge the lithium-ion battery with the included charger, and begin taking photos. Once you're ready to shoot, you have the choice of 25 exposure modes (Easy, Basic, and Creative), five metering modes, three color modes, and a host of other versatile options. To access the Easy exposure modes, simply turn the mode dial on the top of the camera to "Scene" and choose from a range of 15 preprogrammed Scene Select modes, including a Night Scene mode, a children mode, and many more. Each Scene Select mode offers a sample image and a mode description so you'll know what's happening and why.
The color modes, which range from Vivid to Natural to Muted, can produce photos with more highly saturated colors or, at the other end of the spectrum, with washed-out colors. The Vivid mode is ideal for flowers or other nature shots, while the muted mode is great for photographers who plan to heavily manipulate or edit their images with Photoshop or other image software. Users can also choose from two color space settings according to their needs: sRGB, which is the standard for computer monitor viewing and inkjet printer output, and Adobe RGB, which is widely used for commercial applications.
Additional Details
Users also benefit from two memory card slots--one for CompactFlash or Microdrive and one for xD picture cards. Simply depress a button on the back of the camera to choose the card type. It's even possible to copy images from one card type to the other in playback. The E500 also supports 32-bit file formatting, allowing digital photographers to use 2 GB and larger CompactFlash, Microdrive, and xD media cards.
Other features include a choice of three image formats (RAW, TIFF, and JPEG); contrast, sharpness, and tone curve controls; variable white balance settings (from 3,000 to 7,000K); and such extras as a USB cable, video cable, and shoulder strap.

17.5-45mm Oh No!
By B. Bowen
Even though this was remanufactured, the camera arrived in excellent condition. Unfortunately, the camera did not come as advertised. The camera was falsely advertised as having a 14-45mm lense. What you really get is a 17.5-45mm made in China cheap throw-away lense! This is not your typical Japan made high quality lense that is available in a new kit.Because the cheap lense is included, this isn't such a good deal.
